Rainbow Springs Restoration Plan

The Rainbow Springs Basin Working Group is now engaged in working on a Restoration Plan for Rainbow Springs and River. This project is funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and coordinated by Pandion Systems, Inc. This will be a 3-year project with a time-line as follows:

Year 1: Develop a Draft Restoration Plan to be completed by June 2011
Years 2 and 3: Refine the plan as new information comes to light and further work is done. Also begin to implement actions called for by the plan.

The Restoration Plan will identify and catalog the nature and causes of impairments of the Rainbow Springs and River. To implement restoration actions it will be important to develop a shared vision of what a restored Rainbow Springs and River will look like. What exactly are we trying to restore? We need to answer this question and come to a shared vision. Then we can more comfortably move forward with actions to both remove the causes of impairment and repair the past damage of those impairments.

Hand-in-hand with a shared vision will be a clear, scientific understanding of the impairments and how they interact to degrade the springs and river. Pandion is working with scientists from the University of Florida as well as numerous scientists already engaged on the working group to develop this understanding.

The Restoration Plan will be created with the assistance and input of many stakeholders interested in the health of Rainbow Springs. If you are interested in being involved with this process, please contact Coordinator, Peter Colverson via email at pcolverson@pandionsystems.com
